Careful...Hot Plates...
I got to thinking one day - actually one day sometime ago so this has been brewing in my mind for a while...sad eh? Anyway....you know how there's a general school of thought out there that whenever we're told NOT to do something, we immediately want to do it? Then if the food servers in restaurants knew this fact, why would they tell you not to touch your plate because it's hot? That's a sure-fire way of making sure we are COMPELLED to touch our plates. Oh...but what I discovered is that this is just the tip of the iceberg. Here's a fun little experiment for you to run...actually a couple of them.
Experiment #1: The next time you're out at a restaurant with a group of people, watch your fellow-diners as the server serves their food. Count the number of specimens in your experiment and then count the number of them who adjust their plate only seconds upon having it set in front of them. Divide the number of total specimens by the number who adjusted and multiply by 100%. Report back to my blog.
Experiment #2: When you, yourself, receive your plate....try not to adjust your plate! Tell me how many seconds you were able to hold out! Not many I bet. And report that back to my blog too.
Just why is this true? I know for myself...I will even go to the bother of unwrapping my silverware from it's napkin covering and using IT to move a HOT plate. And what I find really intriguing about this is that I will rarely even rotate it more than 5 or 10 degrees. It's not because the servers always serve our plates backwards (main course away from us)....no....I've decided it's not got anything at all to do with the way the server has served us. It just doesn't matter. We will ALWAYS move our plates! It's a mystery to me!

I so know what you mean! We were actually just talking about this. Even if the plate position doen't bother me I will move it if the server tells me its hot and not to touch it! Who knows, its a hard habbit to break! We'll see what happens we go out to eat!
