Bengal Brigade Marching Band
I was in the marching band when I was in high school. My main instrument was the trumpet but I also played French horn (still my favorite) and alto horn. Actually...I began marching in the high school band when I was in 8th grade, I think. It's hard to remember that far back. My high school didn't have football, so as much as I enjoyed marching band, it wasn't full of a lot of opportunity.
We had one competition a year and that was the one and only time we would ever perform the complicated and involved performance we'd spent all of the month of August learning. I grew up in one of those very rural Ohio school districts (Tri-Village) where they relied on property taxes to fund the schools rather than the State stepping up to the plate, but that's not what this blog entry is about. This blog entry is about my niece, Katie. If you've looked at my slide shows, the one from Holden Beach, NC in particular, you've seen pictures of her. Too young to be marching in the high school band? Yes! But she is doing it none the less. Katie, 12, a seventh grader, is marching in her high school band. 
She's been playing the clarinet (in her mother's footsteps) for little more than a year and has found herself participating with kids as much as 6 years older than her in some pretty heavy-duty marching band competitions. A couple weekends ago, the Bengal Brigade (Bluffton High School in Bluffton, Indiana) earned their way into the Indiana Regional High School Marching Band competition for the North district in class D (yeah...another small rural school but in Indiana...big difference). 
Sixteen bands in their class will perform and 5 will earn the right to compete in the Conseco Dome in Indianapolis in the state competition. I don't know how many years the Bengal Brigade went without this opportunity, but last year was their first year in a LONG time and they got 9th in the state. They were tagged the Cinderella band of the year. We're hoping for good things again this year! This Saturday, October 15th, is the big day. And hopefully the next Saturday they'll be headed to Indianapolis!

Sweet. I loved marching band. Our little school didn't have a football team either. So exactly why we had a marching band........ I'm not sure. But I remember how cool it was to play at Cedar Point. I mean, I think anybody can get in their. But it was fun. Congrats to Katie... at 12, that's awesome!
